Boilerplate
Duke Kahanamoku Gallery is a retail and exhibition space authorized to carry the name of Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (1890 to 1968), the five-time Olympic medalist who carried surfing from Waikīkī to the world. It is at the Moana Surfrider, 2365 Kalākaua Avenue, in the building where Kahanamoku and two friends named the Hui Nalu club around 1908. The gallery presents rotating exhibitions on his life, screens a condensed cut of the documentary Waterman, and sells goods carrying his name. It is open as a pop-up.
Copy it as it stands. If you need a shorter version, cut from the end. Note the canon’s own boilerplate says the gallery sells work by island artisans; that is not what is in this room, and this wording is the accurate one.

- The gallery is open. We have not published the hours here yet, so ask at the hotel desk before you make a trip for it. The gallery is a pop-up at the Moana Surfrider, about 6 months, not a permanent room. The run dates are not published here yet.
- Why there
- Hui Nalu, the club Kahanamoku co-founded around 1908, was named on the hotel lawn and run out of the hotel bathhouse. Its captain negotiated the hotel’s beach concession.
- Status
- Authorized to carry the name. State it once. It is not a reason to charge more and it is not the story.
- Not
- Not a museum. It is not accredited and does not claim to be.
Three stories that are actually here
- The address is a matter of record rather than sentiment. The club was named on this lawn, dues were a dollar a year, and a dollar bought you a hook to hang your clothes on.
- The wall. Seven archival photographs of Duke, framed and lit, in the building where his club started. The exhibition changes through the year.
- What the gallery declines to claim. The /moana/ page lists, in public, the things repeated about Kahanamoku and this hotel that we could not source.
Images
Six photographs of the room are on the site. They are web resolution. Ask and we will send you the originals.
The exhibition wall is not among them. We hold a licence to Duke Kahanamoku’s name and likeness, and it does not cover a photographer’s or an archive’s copyright in a particular frame, so we cannot supply archival photographs of him and you should not assume you can run one. Clear every image separately with its rights holder.

Quotes
We will not put words in the mouth of the Kahanamoku family, the rights holders or the Moana Surfrider, and we will not approve a quote we did not say. Ask us and we will get you a real one from a named person.
