Boilerplate

Duke Kahanamoku Gallery is a retail and exhibition space authorized to carry the name of Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (1890 to 1968), the five-time Olympic medalist who carried surfing from Waikīkī to the world. It is at the Moana Surfrider, 2365 Kalākaua Avenue, in the building where Kahanamoku and two friends named the Hui Nalu club around 1908. The gallery exhibits and sells work by island makers, presents rotating exhibitions on Kahanamoku’s life, and screens a condensed cut of the documentary Waterman.

Why there
Hui Nalu, the club Kahanamoku co-founded around 1908, was named on the hotel lawn and run out of the hotel bathhouse. Its captain negotiated the hotel’s beach concession.
Status
Authorized to carry the name. State it once. It is not a reason to charge more and it is not the story.
Not
Not a museum. It is not accredited and does not claim to be.

Three stories that are actually here

  • The address is a matter of record rather than sentiment. The club was named on this lawn, dues were a dollar a year, and a dollar bought you a hook to hang your clothes on.
  • The makers. Named people from named towns, with the wall label and the product page carrying the same five lines. Ask us for the roster and we will introduce you to somebody.
  • What the gallery declines to claim. The /moana/ page lists, in public, the things repeated about Kahanamoku and this hotel that we could not source.

There are no photographs of the room yet, because there is no room yet. When there are, they will be here at print resolution with captions and credits.

We hold a licence to Duke Kahanamoku’s name and likeness. It does not cover a photographer’s or an archive’s copyright in a specific frame, so we cannot supply archival photographs of him and neither should you assume you can run one. Clear every image separately with its rights holder.

Press kits get originals in black and white, never the duotone treatment used on this site.

Quotes

We will not put words in the mouth of the Kahanamoku family, the rights holders or the Moana Surfrider, and we will not approve a quote we did not say. Ask us and we will get you a real one from a named person.
